The German Armed Forces plan to expand their fleet of Puma infantry fighting vehicles, according to the draft federal budget for 2025.

The document outlines financial authorizations of approximately $1.7 billion for the years 2028 and 2029, allowing continued production of these vehicles. Currently, 50 Puma vehicles in the S1 configuration have already been ordered, with deliveries expected between late 2025 and early 2027.

Initially, the Bundeswehr had requested an additional 61 vehicles to reach the full capacity envisioned in its current structure, which also includes training schools for armored vehicle operations. However, experts expect this demand to be revised in light of structural changes and the creation of new mechanized units, in line with NATO’s updated goals. The current framework agreement, signed in May 2025, allows for the purchase of up to 229 Puma vehicles, providing flexibility for future acquisitions.

Additionally, Germany may be preparing for a major acquisition of Boxer wheeled combat vehicles, manufactured by KNDS Germany. The estimated $4.5 billion deal aims to equip a new force category called the “Medium Forces,” focused on mobility and operational agility.

With these investments, the Bundeswehr aims to modernize and enhance its response capabilities in conflict scenarios.
